In mid-December, Riverwood was pleased to host Dr. Ray Christensen, faculty member from the Rural Physician Associate Program (RPAP), for a site visit. Over the past 49 years, Riverwood has hosted and mentored 40 RPAP students, with the first one in 1971!
Through the RPAP program, a third-year medical student lives in a rural community for nine months and participates in rotations of hospital and clinic care of patients under the supervision of local physicians. Dr. Don Hughes, Riverwood Family Practice physician now acts as the primary mentor and trainer for resident physicians and medical students at Riverwood.
The current RPAP student at Riverwood is Allicen Waxlax, who is doing clinical work with Dr. Hughes and other providers from October 2019 through June 2020. Several Riverwood family physicians–Dr. Erik Bostrom, Dr. Austin Krohn and Dr. Aaron Jordan–participated in the RPAP program during their medical education and clinical training.
The RPAP organization shared this comment about Riverwood on its Facebook page: “Thank you so much for your dedication and passion for teaching generations of Minnesota doctors.”
