For those who want to prepare more nutritious meals while stretching their food dollar a helpful resource is available locally.
Sign up for a 6-week Simply Good Cooking class to be held on Thursdays, 6 to 8 p.m., Feb. 5, 12, 19 and 26 and March 5 and 12. Classes will be held at the McGregor High School Home Ec. room, 148 South Second Street.
This cooking class, which Riverwood Healthcare Center is sponsoring through its wellness initiative, will focus on low-cost healthy foods for individuals and families. The goals of the class series include increasing consumption of dark colored vegetables, whole grains and low-fat or fat-free dairy foods; increasing the number of meals cooked at home; engaging participants in at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity daily; and increasing snacking on fruits and vegetables.
A class participant from Wright County commented: “I just want to tell you how much I learned in your classes. I am eating healthier, I have lost 5 pounds and I feel so good.”
The Simply Good Cooking series is part of the University of Minnesota Extension’s SNAP-Ed nutrition education program and is offered free with a Statewide Health Improvement Program (SHIP) Innovation grant.
Limited to 12 participants, registration is required. Contact Dan Schletty, Riverwood health and wellness coach, at (218) 927-5168 or dschletty@riverwoodhealthcare.org
