July is UV Safety Month

Summer is a good time to focus on eye health and safety. Protecting your eyes from ultraviolet (UV) rays is especially important when many of us are spending more time outdoors.

Ultraviolet rays are invisible to the eye and overexposure can cause a number of eye problems, including macular degeneration, cataracts and skin cancer around the eye. UV rays come from the sun but they are also reflected from water, snow, sand and other bright surfaces.

The best way to protect your vision is to wear sunglasses with UV protection built into the lenses and a hat with a rim that blocks rays from your eyes. For more information on eye diseases and treatment, go to www.preventblindness.org or www.crosbyeyeclinic.com
