Wellness: Show your HEART some love

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. Every year, 1 in 4 deaths are caused by heart disease.

The good news is that heart disease can often be prevented with healthy lifestyle choices. During National Heart Health Month in February, take stock of your heart health.

Show your heart some LOVE. When dining out, choose the low-fat menu option. Ease up on salt consumption and substitute herbs and spices for seasoning. Look for ways to stay active … go out for a walk or exercise indoors. Be mindful of your stress level and find ways to relax and rejuvenate your mind and body.

Know your risk for heart disease. Family history, eating habits and sleep patterns are just a few of the factors that raise your risk for heart disease. Nearly 80 percent of heart attacks and strokes can be treated, prevented and even ended, if you learn about what puts you at risk and take action toward fighting it. Once you know what your risk factors are, you can learn how to make positive changes in your lifestyle habits.
