For Dr. Tim Arnold, a family physician at McGregor Clinic and chief medical information officer at Riverwood Healthcare Center, running is more than a way to stay in shape—it’s a lifelong passion that has shaped his approach to wellness and life.
Dr. Arnold’s journey as a runner began in high school, where he participated in Cross Country. Since then, running has remained a constant in his life. Today, he applies that same dedication not only to guiding his patients on wellness but also to leading the Cross Country team at McGregor High School, where he’s now in his sixth year as an assistant coach.
“Running has always been a family affair for us. My wife, Teri, has run many marathons and half marathons, and when our son, Will, joined the team, it made coaching even more special,” Dr. Arnold shares. “When the McGregor Cross Country team needed a new coach, I thought it would be a fun opportunity. I had already coached youth baseball for many years, so I gladly stepped in.”
Dr. Arnold’s approach to leading the team is hands-on. “I’ve always run every workout with the kids,” he explains. “Earlier this season, I had to step back due to a lingering foot injury, but I’m back to running with them most days now. Over the course of the season, we typically cover between 200 and 300 miles.”
For Dr. Arnold, coaching is about more than just physical training—it’s about teaching mental resilience and grit. Running, like many sports, offers valuable life lessons, especially for young athletes.
“I believe the lessons learned through running extend far beyond the track,” Dr. Arnold says. “It’s a mental challenge more than anything. Running in harsh conditions—whether it’s wind, rain, cold, or heat—demands mental toughness. Our coaching staff encourages the kids to translate that grit into their everyday lives.”
Being a mentor to young runners is something that comes naturally to Dr. Arnold. “A tough day at school, a difficult exam, or even personal struggles can be put into perspective when these kids realize they are capable of doing hard things and excelling,” he explains. “We also spend a lot of time teaching them how to quiet their minds and slowing things down. In today’s fast-paced world, learning how to control your thoughts is a big part of running.”
Beyond his role as a physician and coach, Dr. Arnold’s commitment to the community aligns with Riverwood Healthcare Center’s dedication to giving back. As part of a healthcare organization that emphasizes the importance of community wellness, Dr. Arnold embodies these values by helping young athletes not only excel in their sport but also build resilience that serves them in everyday life.
“At Riverwood, we believe in fostering strong community connections, and our team members are an integral part of that mission,” Dr. Arnold says. “I see coaching as an extension of my role as a physician—both are about guiding people to be their best and showing them, they can overcome obstacles.”
In addition to running, Dr. Arnold enjoys cycling, reading, learning new things, hunting, and getting outdoors whenever he can. Through running, Dr. Arnold continues to inspire both his patients and his team, showing that the discipline and resilience developed can enrich all areas of life.
