Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, affecting millions of Americans and often limiting their ability to stay active and enjoy daily life. At Riverwood Healthcare Center, our orthopaedic experts are here to help patients manage joint pain and get back to doing what they love.
“Osteoarthritis is often referred to as ‘wear and tear’ arthritis,” explains Jeff Temple, NP, an orthopaedic specialist at Riverwood. “It typically affects weight-bearing joints like the hips and knees, leading to stiffness, swelling, and pain that can interfere with basic activities like walking, dressing, or exercising.”
Temple, along with Physician Assistant Erin Mason, PA-C, provides expert care for patients dealing with joint discomfort, whether from aging, injury, or long-term joint stress. The orthopaedic team is available Monday through Friday to diagnose and treat osteoarthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions.
A Personalized Approach to Joint Care
Diagnosing osteoarthritis isn’t always straightforward, as symptoms often mimic other conditions. That’s why the Riverwood team emphasizes a thorough approach—listening to patients’ concerns, conducting hands-on physical exams, and using imaging like X-rays or MRIs to determine the root cause of pain.
“We want to treat the person, not just the joint,” says Temple. “Our goal is to preserve mobility, reduce pain, and avoid surgery whenever possible through conservative, proven methods.”
Treatment options may include physical therapy, weight loss support, braces or orthotics, medications, supplements, and joint injections. Riverwood’s providers work closely with each patient to develop a care plan tailored to their lifestyle and goals.
When Surgery Is the Right Step
While most cases of osteoarthritis can be managed without surgery, advanced cases may require joint replacement. In those instances, Riverwood connects patients with trusted orthopaedic surgeons and supports them through pre-surgical strengthening and post-surgical recovery.
“With advances in joint replacement, patients are recovering faster and getting back to the activities they enjoy,” notes Temple.
