Managing diabetes is a lifelong journey, but with the right tools, support, and mindset, you can still live your best life. At Riverwood Healthcare Center, our diabetes care team is here to help you take control of your health and thrive.
Whether you’ve been recently diagnosed or have been managing diabetes for years, small daily choices can make a big difference in your blood sugar levels, energy, and overall well-being.
Tips for Managing Diabetes
- Eat with intention. Focus on whole foods like vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Avoid sugary drinks and highly processed foods. Try swaps like spaghetti squash instead of pasta or sparkling water instead of soda.
- Stay active. Aim for at least 30 minutes of movement most days. Walking, biking, swimming, or even dancing can help lower blood sugar and improve heart health.
- Monitor your blood sugar. Regular checks help you understand how food, activity, and stress affect your levels. Riverwood offers professional continuous glucose monitoring to help track trends and guide treatment decisions.
- Take medications as prescribed. Work with your provider to adjust doses if needed. Never skip medications without medical advice.
- Care for your emotional health. Living with diabetes can be overwhelming. Support groups, counseling, and talking with your care team can help.
- Know when to seek emergency care. If you experience symptoms like extreme thirst, confusion, rapid breathing, or fruity-smelling breath, seek medical attention immediately. These may be signs of dangerously high or low blood sugar.
- Ask questions. Your healthcare team is your partner. Don’t hesitate to speak up about symptoms, concerns, or goals.
“Managing diabetes can feel overwhelming at first, but you don’t have to figure it out alone,” said Breann Goedken, RN, Diabetes Care & Education Nurse. “Our team is here to help you come up with a plan that’s realistic and manageable—one that fits your life and helps you feel in control.”
