Family physician joins Riverwood Healthcare

Tony Blankers, MD

Riverwood Healthcare Center is pleased to welcome Dr. Tony Blankers, family physician, to its medical staff of 17 primary care providers. He will offer the full spectrum of family medicine, including obstetric care and delivery, and some coverage of on-call rotations for inpatient care.

“After getting to know Dr. Blankers and his family, I am honored that he chose to join the Riverwood team,” said Todd Sandberg, Riverwood CEO. “Patients are going to quickly pick up on his passion for them individually and for rural medicine. Please join me and the Riverwood team as we welcome him and his family to the community, letting them know how grateful we are to have them here.”

Blankers earned his medical degree at the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine in Rochester and completed a three-year residency with the Family Medicine Residency of Idaho in Twin Falls. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and a minor in chemistry from Bethel University in St. Paul.

A native of Hospers in northwestern Iowa, Blankers has many connections with Minnesota. He met his wife, Steph, who grew up in Lake City, Minn., at Bethel University. He and Dr. Erik Bostrom, Riverwood family physician, are well acquainted through college and family connections.

“Growing up in a small town, I always dreamed of being a family doctor,” Blankers said. “I like the ability to connect with individuals, families and the community that a family practice offers. I trained for my residency in a rural site in Idaho that focused on the full scope of family medicine.

“When I visited the organization last year, I felt very welcome and was instantly impressed with the inviting culture and dedicated community support. Riverwood has a clear commitment to excellence with a legacy of established family doctors serving here for their entire career.”

Blankers will primarily see patients at Riverwood’s Aitkin clinic. For an appointment, call (218) 927-2157.

Tony and Steph Blankers have a two-year-old son, Melvin. For hobbies, he enjoys boating, road biking, snowmobiling, mountain biking, and motorcycling and is excited to learn more about hunting and fishing.
