Breast Cancer Awareness: Why Early Detection Matters

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and there’s no better time to prioritize your breast health. If you’ve been putting off a mammogram or wondering about changes in your body, consider this your reminder: early detection saves lives. Riverwood is here to support you with compassionate care and state-of-the-art technology.

Know the Signs

Breast cancer can present in many ways, and not all symptoms are obvious. Some common warning signs include:

  • A new lump in the breast or underarm
  • Changes in breast size or shape
  • Skin dimpling or thickening
  • Nipple discharge (other than breast milk), including blood
  • Redness, flakiness, or pain in the nipple area
  • Pulling in of the nipple

It’s important to know what’s normal for your body. If you notice any changes, don’t wait – talk to your provider.

Why Mammograms Matter

Mammograms (an X-Ray of the breasts) are the most effective tool for detecting breast cancer early, often before symptoms appear. Early detection dramatically improves treatment outcomes and survival rates.

In addition to 3D mammography and other breast imaging tests, Riverwood offers DynaCAD imaging for enhanced breast MRI readings.

“Mammograms can feel a little intimidating, but they’re quick, safe, and truly lifesaving,” says Dr. Jennifer Tessmer-Tuck, OB/GYN at Riverwood. “They’re the most effective tool we have to catch breast cancer early and keep you healthy.”

The American Cancer Society recommends that women begin considering annual mammograms as early as age 40. Between ages 45 and 54, yearly screenings are strongly advised. After age 55, women may choose to continue with annual mammograms or switch to every other year, depending on their health history and personal preferences. It’s always best to talk with your healthcare provider about what’s right for you.
