One Year Later, Ohio Patient Returns to Thank Riverwood Team for Exceptional Care

Gratitude brings a former patient back to Riverwood one year after an unexpected injury interrupted his fishing trip.

A year ago, Ohio resident Bob Vance was in Garrison for an annual fishing trip, a tradition his group has enjoyed for three generations.

“Aitkin County has all the good lakes,” Bob said with a smile.

The trip began under gray skies and steady rain, ideal fishing conditions. But as Bob stepped into the boat, the slick surface and shifting water caused him to lose his footing. The result was immediate and intense pain.

“I was in misery,” Bob said. “But things turned around pretty fast once I got to Riverwood.”

Bob was evaluated right away in the Emergency Department, where the team quickly managed his pain and worked to determine the cause: a torn adductor longus muscle and a massive hematoma. He was admitted to the hospital for observation and treatment.

“My nurses took such good care of me, I decided to spend the night,” Bob joked.

While the injury interrupted his fishing trip, the experience left a lasting impression. Bob says the care he received from physicians, nurses and staff was exceptional from the moment he arrived.

That impression was so strong that this year, while returning to the area for another fishing trip, Bob and his fishing buddy, Dan, made a special stop at Riverwood. With treats in hand, they visited the Emergency Department to reconnect with the team members who cared for him during an unexpected turn of events the year before.

For Bob, the visit was about more than delivering treats. It was an opportunity to personally thank the caregivers whose compassion, expertise and kindness helped turn a painful accident into a positive memory.

“When something like that happens away from home, it can be overwhelming,” Bob said. “Everyone at Riverwood treated me like family. I wanted to come back and thank them for everything they did for me.”

His return visit served as a reminder that great care extends beyond treatment alone. For Bob, what could have been remembered as a painful end to a fishing trip instead became a story of compassion, connection and gratitude, one he was eager to share with the team who helped him when he needed it most.
