Riverwood Healthcare Center is alerting patients and community members about a phishing scam targeting MyChart users at health systems across the country.
While Riverwood patients have not been impacted, the organization is sharing this information proactively to help patients recognize and avoid fraudulent emails designed to steal personal information.
The scam involves emails promoting a free “MyChart Medicare Kit” or “Senior Health Package.” Messages may use subject lines such as “Your MyChart Medicare Kit Awaits!” and appear to come from trusted healthcare sources. However, these emails do not originate from Riverwood Healthcare Center or Epic’s MyChart platform and are intended to trick recipients into clicking malicious links or sharing sensitive information.
“We have not identified any impact to Riverwood patients from this phishing campaign, but awareness is one of the best defenses against cyber threats,” said Shane Ahrendt, Information Security Engineer. “We encourage patients to be cautious of unsolicited emails offering free products or requesting personal information. If something seems suspicious, delete the message and contact Riverwood directly with any questions.”
Patients who receive these messages should delete them immediately and avoid clicking any links or downloading attachments.
Riverwood also reminds patients to follow these cybersecurity best practices:
- Verify the sender’s email address before opening or responding to messages.
- Be cautious of unsolicited offers for free products, services, or health-related packages.
- Watch for grammatical errors, unusual wording, or requests for personal information.
- Delete suspicious emails without clicking links or opening attachments.
