Riverwood Healthcare Center is pleased to welcome Andrew Highum, DPM, a highly trained foot and ankle surgeon/podiatrist, to its medical staff.
Dr. Highum completed his undergraduate degree at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and earned his doctorate from the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago. He completed his residency training at Illinois Masonic Medical Center, also in Chicago. With experience caring for patients across the lifespan—from pediatrics to geriatrics—he is dedicated to providing comprehensive, relationship‑centered foot and ankle care.
“I aim to deliver excellent conservative and surgical care for the full spectrum of foot and ankle conditions,” Dr. Highum said. “Improving patients’ lives by relieving pain and correcting deformities is incredibly rewarding—whether through conservative treatments or reconstructive surgery.”
Dr. Highum is passionate about helping individuals return to activities they once struggled to do without pain. He values the meaningful, long-term relationships that form as he works with patients to restore mobility and function.
“Diagnosing complex foot and ankle problems and creating the right treatment plan is one of the most enjoyable challenges of being a podiatrist,” he explained. “Not everything is black and white, which keeps you learning and improving.”
Dr. Highum is a Fellow of the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery (ABFAS) and American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) and is board certified in Rearfoot and Ankle Reconstructive Surgery and Foot Surgery.
Dr. Highum and his wife, Sonja, a surgical nurse at Riverwood, have been married since 1993. They have three adult children; Isaac, a third-year podiatric medical student; Megan, their daughter-in-law, a second-year family medicine resident; Aubrey, a first-year orthopedic surgery resident; Brianna, a first-year DO medical student.
His hobbies include spending time with family and their dogs, traveling, fishing, hunting, golfing, woodworking, and enjoying the outdoors.
Dr. Highum is now seeing patients at the Specialty Clinic in Aitkin. To schedule an appointment, call 218-927-8281.
