Riverwood welcomes new nurse midwife

Megan Workman, DNP, CNW

Riverwood Healthcare Center is pleased to introduce new midwifery services with Megan Workman, a certified nurse midwife who cares for women across their lifespan—before, during and well beyond the child-bearing years.

Workman is a doctor of nursing practice (nurse practitioner) and completed the midwifery program at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. As a student nurse midwife, she participated in labor and delivery and births of many pregnancies. She also saw women in clinic for their gynecological needs, preventative care, birth control, menstruation and menopausal issues as well as prenatal and postpartum care. Previously, she completed an associate of science degree at McHenry County College, in Crystal Lake, Ill., and a bachelor of science degree in nursing, at St. Anthony College of Nursing, Rockford, Ill.

Her nursing experience in both clinic and hospital settings includes more than six years of labor and delivery, antepartum, nursery and postpartum experience at Centegra Hospital in Woodstock, Ill., and at St. Joseph’s Hospital in the HealthEast Care System in St. Paul, Minn. She also worked as a gastrointestinal endoscopic nurse for four years at Minnesota Gastroenterology in Eagan, Minn.

“Megan brings some unique experience, skills and training that will enhance obstetric and women’s healthcare at Riverwood,” Dr. Mark Heggem, Chief Medical Officer at Riverwood. “We are thrilled to welcome her to our medical staff.”

Workman’s specialty areas of interest are obstetrics and women’s health. She will see female patients from the onset of menstruation through the post-menopausal years.  She offers primary care, annual well woman exams, preventive healthcare and counseling, gynecologic, family planning, birth control, preconception counseling, prenatal care, labor and delivery, postpartum care, breastfeeding assistance, and menopause and peri-menopause.

Workman advised that midwives can perform comprehensive physical examinations, prescribe medications and order lab and other diagnostic tests. While some midwives attend home births, Workman will only help patients with labor and delivery in the hospital in Aitkin, where she can facilitate whatever form of labor pain management a patient chooses, including laboring in the whirlpool in Riverwood’s birthing center.

“I love small communities and my husband Brett and I have always wanted to be part of Aitkin’s community as he grew up here,” Workman says.  “We are very happy to be making that dream a reality.  Riverwood is an excellent health system that strives to promote health and wellness while providing outstanding care to those in need. I am proud to be part of the Riverwood healthcare team.  I am also very excited to bring nurse-midwifery to Aitkin. As a certified nurse midwife, I look forward to partnering with area women to live the healthiest lives they can.”

Megan Workman lives in Aitkin with husband, Brett, and four sons Bowen (15), Jack (12), Hayden (8) and Luke (5).  Her hobbies include spending time camping, hiking and exploring with her family as well as refinishing furniture, doing house projects, and showing her two Great Danes.

Beginning in mid-October, Workman will initially see patients only at Riverwood’s Aitkin clinic. For an appointment, call (218) 927-2157 or toll free at (888) 270-1882.
