AITKIN, Minn. — Hosted by Riverwood Healthcare Foundation, The Legacy Gala was a night to remember, bringing together friends, neighbors, and supporters to celebrate 70 years of exceptional rural healthcare and to raise support for the future of care in the region.
More than 135 guests enjoyed dinner, entertainment by dueling pianos, a live auction, and basket raffles. But beyond the festivities, the evening was about something bigger – coming together to ensure that exceptional healthcare remains close to home for generations to come.
Riverwood leaders CEO Ken Westman and COO Cindi Baker reflected on Riverwood’s journey from a small community hospital serving Aitkin families to its growth into a trusted regional provider serving thousands of patients each year.
“Riverwood’s story began more than seven decades ago with a small hospital meeting the basic needs of Aitkin families. Today, we’ve grown into the largest employer in the county, offering advanced surgical specialties and primary care while keeping services close to home,” Westman said.
Baker noted the challenges rural hospitals face nationwide, including closures and mergers, while highlighting Riverwood’s unique position.
“Unlike many, Riverwood remains proudly independent,” Baker said. “That independence allows us to make decisions based on what’s best for our community—not a corporate office miles away.”
“With your partnership, Riverwood will remain independent, strong, and here for generations to come,” Westman concluded.
The evening highlighted not only Riverwood’s history but also the collective responsibility of ensuring a strong future for rural healthcare. The success of the evening was made possible through an incredible team of dedicated volunteers led by Tanya Pietz, Riverwood Foundation Director and Paula Eklund Fisher, Riverwood Foundation Coordinator, as well as many generous sponsors and donors.
