Enjoy health benefits of blueberries

If you could pick a food that is jam packed with health benefits, what would it be? Try blueberries. Blueberries are loaded with antioxidants and phytonutrients that may help prevent chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease. Antioxidants are compounds that protect against cell damage that occurs naturally with age, chronic sun exposure, environmental toxins and stress.

Blueberries can also promote mental sharpness as we age and improve short-term memory because they contain flavonoids, which protect and strengthen the connections between neurons, making it easier for them to communicate.

Blueberries rank as a superfood along with broccoli, dark green leafy vegetables like spinach and kale, avocado, sweet potatoes and yogurt to name a few.  Superfoods are nutrient-dense, mostly plant-based, whole foods that are chocked full of vitamins, antioxidants and minerals.

“Enjoy blueberries in cereal, salads, smoothies or a yogurt snack,” said Melissa Simons, registered dietitian with Riverwood Healthcare Center. “While uncooked blueberries have the highest nutritional value, add them to muffins and pancakes too. This is a great time of year to either buy freshly picked blueberries or pick your own.”
