Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Prioritize Your Health, Schedule Your Mammogram

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a reminder for women to make their health a priority and stay up to date on recommended screenings.

A screening mammogram takes only a short time but can make a life-changing difference. Regular mammograms can detect breast cancer before symptoms appear, when treatment is often most effective.

“One of the most important messages we can share is that screening saves lives,” said Joel Madson, MD, family medicine physician at Riverwood Healthcare Center. “Many women feel healthy and have no symptoms, which is exactly why routine mammograms are so important. Early detection gives us the best opportunity to find breast cancer at its earliest and most treatable stage.”

While a family history of breast cancer can increase risk, most women diagnosed with breast cancer do not have a family history of the disease. Risk factors may include:

  • Age
  • Family history
  • Genetics
  • Lifestyle factors

Understanding your personal risk and talking with your healthcare provider about screening recommendations are important steps toward protecting your health. While mammograms remain the primary screening tool for most women, some patients may benefit from additional imaging based on their personal risk factors, family history, or provider recommendations. Riverwood also offers breast MRI services, providing advanced imaging options for patients who require enhanced screening or further evaluation.

Small Steps Can Make a Difference

While not all risk factors can be controlled, healthy habits may help reduce your risk of breast cancer:

  • Stay physically active
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Limit alcohol consumption
  • Keep up with routine preventive care
