Riverwood presents DAISY Award to hospital nurse

Judy Friesner, RN

Riverwood Healthcare Center participates in the DAISY Award honoring exemplary nurses who have been recognized by a patient for their extraordinary act of compassion or a relationship that they have created with a patient that truly made a difference. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.

The latest DAISY award recipient at Riverwood is Judy Friesner, a registered nurse for Riverwood’s hospital nursing unit.

Judy Havisto, a Riverwood patient who nominated Friesner, shared these comments: “I’ve had many great nurses during hospital stays, but Judy is the best nurse I’ve ever had. She treated me like I was important, loved, and cared about. She is a jewel for this hospital. My family members all loved her.”

Friesner distinctly remembers caring for Judy H. and comments, “She was a spunky woman who had a lasting effect on how I care for my patients. After all, we do share the same name and we jokingly said together it practically made us best friends the first time we met.”

Friesner adds, “Riverwood is the first hospital I worked at as a RN and the support and education I have received from my preceptors, senior staff members, and the Aitkin community is phenomenal. I have been built up into the nurse I am today because of them. I wouldn’t be receiving this award without their guidance.”

Friesner and her husband reside in Aitkin. She is excited to continue to grow her family in the amazing Aitkin community.

Riverwood Chief Nursing Officer Carla Zupko adds: “On behalf of Riverwood, we are pleased to recognize Judy as our fifth DAISY Award winner; she is so deserving of this recognition. We encourage patients to nominate other nurses who have delivered outstanding care for the DAISY award, which we give out three times a year.”

Nomination forms are available in Riverwood’s clinic lobbies and included in inpatient packets. The form is also available for downloading at www.riverwoodhealthcare.org (click on News & Events, DAISY Award news release) or by contacting Michelle Gauthier at (218) 927-2121 or mgauthier@rwhealth.org

About the DAISY Award
The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, CA, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes.  Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.

The DAISY Award and DAISY Team Award are initiatives of The DAISY Foundation in service to the nursing profession.  Additionally, DAISY offers J. Patrick Barnes Grants for Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Practice Projects, The DAISY Faculty Award to honor inspiring faculty members in schools and colleges of nursing, and The DAISY in Training Award for nursing students.
