Speech Therapy

Riverwood Healthcare offers a variety of speech-language pathology services to prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, social communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders in children and adults.

Speech therapy can help adult patients affected by stroke, brain injury, breathing problems, head/neck cancer, or vocal abuse/illness. However, patients with diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, and ALS can benefit too.

Speech-language pathology therapy services are available in Aitkin. For an appointment, call Riverwood’s Therapy Services department at 218-927-5580.

Other considerations for speech therapy include:

  • Cognitive communication disorders (memory, attention deficits, organization)
  • Dysarthria (muscular weakness, voice slurring or very soft)
  • Dysphagia (difficulty chewing or swallowing)
  • Pediatric speech and language disorders (articulation, autism, social skill deficits, stuttering)
  • Voice disorders caused by illness, surgery, or misuse (difficulty projecting voice, e.g. singing)
  • LSVT LOUD (improves vocal loudness with muscle retraining)

Pediatric care

Speech therapy for communication and swallowing problems is typically ordered for pediatric patients when either articulation issues or developmental delay are present. Pediatric speech therapy helps children improve their communication skills, including speech, language, cognition and voice.  Speech therapy can also help with feeding issues that stem from medical conditions of the mouth or throat.

We can evaluate and treat speech articulation, stuttering, voice, and language development to help children better communicate their wants and needs.
