Erik Bostrom, MD, Family Physician, Riverwood
Riverwood Healthcare Center welcomes Dr. Erik Bostrom, family physician, to its medical staff with nine physicians, seven nurse practitioners, one physician assistant, and one nurse midwife who deliver primary care in Aitkin, Garrison and McGregor. He will practice primarily in Aitkin.
“Dr. Bostrom is a perfect fit for our family medical team with his strong desire to do both clinic and hospital patient care,” says Dr. Mark Heggem, chief medical officer at Riverwood. “His enthusiasm for rural medicine combined with his clinical and interpersonal skills are a great asset.”
Bostrom has recently completed a three-year residency at the University of Minnesota’s Family Residency program in St. Cloud. He earned his medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis. Graduating cum laude, Bostrom earned his undergraduate degree in physics from Bethel University in St. Paul.
Bostrom looks forward to practicing the full spectrum of family medicine for all life stages, including obstetrics, pediatrics, and younger to older adults. He describes his personal philosophy/approach to medical care: “I believe a physician needs to be caring, compassionate, and competent. As a physician, I want to empower my patients to take ownership of their health and help them achieve their health goals. I believe everyone is unique and try to develop an individualized plan for each of my patients.”
He adds, “Even though my dad is a family physician, I didn’t think I would follow in his footsteps when I started college. But in 2006, a medical mission trip to the Dominican Republic changed my mind. I saw that I could make a real difference in the lives of others by becoming a physician. I then did some job shadowing at the Mora clinic and decided to go into family medicine.”
A nine-month clinical rotation in the Rural Physician Associate Program in Lake City reinforced Bostrom’s desire to live and work in rural Minnesota. Plus, he grew up close by in Mora, Minn., and is an avid outdoorsman, pursuing hobbies of hunting, fishing, camping, skiing, bird watching and wildlife photography.
