Mary Livingston – Reflux Care

Mary Livingston sought help for her hiatal hernia and gastroesophageal (GERD) reflux disease while suffering a range of symptoms. After experiencing sleepless nights, painful acid reflux and burping, she decided it was time to get the help she needed.

Following her annual physical exam, Mary was referred to the Minnesota Reflux and Heartburn Center at Riverwood Healthcare Center in Aitkin.

“My reflux specialist seemed very concerned and not only wanted to talk about my GERD problems, but about my overall well-being and how my health plays a big role in my life.” Mary said.

Mary was connected with Dawn Harcey, RN and GI Clinical Coordinator, who helps patients navigate their GERD diagnostic testing and individualized treatment plans.

“Dawn directed me on how to follow the procedure guidelines and was very good about communicating what would be next in the process of my treatment,” Mary said.

After her procedure, a laparoscopic hiatal hernia repair with Toupet Fundoplication, Mary no longer had to worry about restless sleep or what she ate. She was then able to stop taking her acid reflux medication, lost 20 pounds, and felt more energetic.

According to Mary, Riverwood went above and beyond with her care. “Not only did they treat my physical concerns, but my mental and post-care were excellent. Everything fell into place, and I never had any second thoughts. I was impressed with everyone’s skill level, and the technology was very up to date and modern.”

Mary is now able to effortlessly do what she loves, such as spending time with her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
