Physician in training will join Riverwood medical staff

Dr. Austin Krohn to join Riverwood Family Practice in 2014.

Dr. Austin Krohn, who trained at Riverwood Healthcare Center through the Rural Physician Associate Program from October 2008 through June 2009, returned for a week of family medicine clinical training July 16-20.

Krohn, in his third year of residency training at North Memorial Medical Center in the Twin Cities, will join the family practice medical staff at Riverwood when he completes his training in the fall of 2014. He will finish his residency in 2013 and then has plans to complete a one-year fellowship in sports medicine.

“I’ve been a sports nut all my life, playing football, baseball and basketball,” Krohn says. “So tapping this passion to treat those with sports-related injuries and other orthopaedic issues is of great interest to me. While musculoskeletal medicine certainly is a passion of mine, I have strong interests across the whole spectrum of family medicine, including obstetric care.”

He adds:  “For me, coming to a small community to practice medicine is what I’ve always wanted.  I grew up in Pierz, similar in size to Aitkin, and I’m looking forward to raising my children in a close-knit community where I’ll get to see friends and neighbors as patients. I look forward to settling down here in a few years and getting active in the community.”

Krohn and his wife Colleen have already put down roots in Aitkin. They have purchased a home near Cedar Lake and have a 2-year-old daughter, Ella, and another baby due to arrive in a few months.

Dr. Mark Heggem, Chief Medical Officer at Riverwood, comments: “In this highly competitive recruitment environment for family physicians to join smaller practices in rural communities, we are very fortunate to have Austin joining our medical staff.  His passion for family medicine, and this community, is a huge asset for our medical team and his patients.”
